CANYON, Texas – The top ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M fended off elimination in style on Friday night as they showed their resiliency with a 10-0 run-rule win over the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in front of over 350 fans at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas during the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament. The Lady Buffs avenge an earlier season loss to the Lions as WT improves to 54-3 overall while TAMUC ends their season at 37-19 in their first NCAA Postseason appearance in just the program's second year of existence.
The Lady Buffs came out swinging as the visiting team on the scoreboard as
Andrea Sitter drew a full-count walk with one out followed by a
Shea Ibrahim two run blast on top of the batting cages past the black monster in left field for the 2-0 lead.
Kourtney Coveney was hit by a pitch to start the second followed by a
Shayne Starkey single thru the right side, the Lions forced a flyout to center to roll the WT lineup over as
Brittany Gehle laced a ball down the left field line to score Coveney at 3-0. Sitter was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a fielder's choice groundout for the second out at the plate followed by another HBP to score Starkey as
Lacey Taylor drove in a run at 4-0, WT added to their lead as
Ashley Hardin connected on her 21
st homerun of the season with a 2-out grand slam to left at 8-0.
The Lions registered their first hit of the game in the home half of the second with a leadoff single followed by a hit-by-pitch two batters later before Hardin made a great play on the run in center field for the second out followed by a popup to Ibrahim in foul territory at third to end the threat at 8-0. The Lady Buffs used the free pass to put runners on first and second with one out followed by Sitter being hit by another pitch to load the bases, Taylor was hit by another pitch with the bases loaded to drive in another run before a flyout to right center ended the inning with WT leading 9-0.
WT wasn't done yet as
Brittany Cruz led off the fifth inning on third base as she reached on a Commerce fielding error followed by a Gehle four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners with no outs, Sitter beat out an infield single to second base to score Cruz followed by another great outfield catch by TAMUC's Haley Colwell for the first out followed by a pair of outs to end the inning at 10-0. The Lions wouldn't go down without a fight as they loaded the bases with two outs before a popup to
Bailey Anderson at second base for the 10-0 win.
Tori Bayer picked up the win (16-0) for the Lady Buffs as the senior allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
The Lady Buffs advance to Championship Saturday as they take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa starting at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, the Lady Buffs will need a pair of wins over CMU to continue their record setting season.
