Antjuan Ball of the West Texas A&M men's basketball team has advanced into the semi-finals of the fifth annual State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition. In the online voting competition, decided entirely by the fans, Ball is halfway there in his journey to compete among the nation's best dunkers on national television as he has now advanced for the second time in the competition, now among four remaining individuals from the original 16 participants selected. Voting for the semi-finals is now open through Wednesday, March 4, at Noon (CT).
This afternoon, Ball came out of the second round with a very close victory over Brandon "Snap" Peters of Talladega College, picking up 51% of the vote.
Ball received 59% of the votes in his first-round head-to-head matchup win over Evan Pannell of Wooster College (Ohio), the highest percentage of any winner in the opening round. Semi-Final voting for the final eight contestants began at 12 p.m. (CT) today, Wednesday, Feb. 25. Ball's opponent for the semi-finals is Crishawn Hopkins of Wright State University.
Intersport, producers of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, announced two weeks ago, Wednesday (Feb. 11) that the Dark Horse Dunker Competition had begun. The 16-player field began with loaded under-the-radar players who own the creativity, hops, and power to compete against college basketball's stars in the College Slam Dunk Championship.
Ball is one of the final four left in the competition who advanced out of the original 16 to the semi-finals and a trip to the national stage in Indianapolis on Final Four weekend is on the line.
Fans will solely determine who the winner is by voting daily at
DarkHorseDunker.com throughout the four-week competition. The winner will compete in 27th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at 6 p.m. (C.T.) April 2 on ESPN
"Over its 26 editions, the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships have become the benchmark for skills events," said Drew Russell, vice president of Owned Properties at Intersport. "Through the first four years of the program, the State Farm Dark Horse Dunker winner has gone on to win the College Slam Dunk Championship three times. This fan element has really added electricity to the whole event."
The State Farm Dark Horse Dunker is a bracket-style elimination competition. Semi-final round voting is now open for one week and features two remaining head-to-head matchups. Winners who advance to the final round will be announced March 4 when the final round opens. Voting for the finals also will be open one week. The champion will be announced March 11 at
DarkHorseDunker.com and will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, which airs April 2 live on ESPN.
Previous State Farm Dark Horse Dunker winners include Marcus Lewis (Eastern Kentucky University) in 2014, Corey Law (High Point University) in 2013, James Justice (Martin Methodist College) in 2012, and Jacob Tucker (Illinois College) in 2011. Lewis, Justice and Tucker all went on to win the College Slam Dunk Championship.
